The Media's Fake News about President Trump

The Goebelesses -- also known as the Mass Media -- have recently created some Fake News about President Donald Trump. What happened (and you can see the actual video of Trump speaking in many places, such as here) was that Trump stated as follows (admittedly, he doesn't speak in a very sophisticated way) on February 18th 2017:

"We've gotta keep our country safe. You look at what's happening. We've got to keep our country safe. You look at what's happening in Germany, you look at what's happening (last night) in Sweden. Sweden! Who would believe this: Sweden! They took in large numbers, they're having problems."

Then the Goebbelesses got into a feeding-frenzy of headlines, stating that Trump had invented a terror-attack in Sweden that had never happened! For example, Stuff wrote the headline on February 20th 2017:

"The Swedish terror that only Donald Trump was brave enough to call out"

and on February 22nd Stuff wrote the headline:

"Five ways US President Trump can avoid the next 'Swedish terror' gaffe".

And TV One told the same sort of lies, doubling down on their lies at 6:24 AM on 21 February 2017.

In fact (I was once a part-time journalist and I have a Diploma of Journalism) the truth is that:

  1. Trump did not mention the word "terror" or any word that implied terror;

  2. Trump did not make any gaffes -- only the media committed a gaffe in this instance;

  3. If you understand English grammar (I have a degree in Linguistics, as it happens), you know that the phrases " what's happening" and "they're having" are examples of the present continuous tense. The present continuous tense is used to talk about what IS CONTINUOUSLY happening! It is NOT used to talk about one single event. If Trump had wanted to talk about one single event, he would have used a phrase like "what happened" or "they had". Any Native Speaker of English, in fact, knows that very well and doesn't need a degree in Linguistics!!

  4. Admittedly Trump used the phrase "last night", which refers to ONE particular time, rather than to a continuous series of events, but any intelligent person would combine that bit of information together with the use of the present continous tense and realise that it didn't make sense and needed to be checked up on.

  5. But not the Goebelesses! They hate Trump so much that they have continously been highlighting every bit of damaging publicity about Trump that they possibly could, and here was a great opportunity to show up Trump in a bad light -- yet again!

It turns out that what President Trump was referring to was a Fox News report "last night" about an alleged connection between immigrants/refugees and an increased crime rate in Sweden!
